    Interview with Wang Guangfa: I still think the epidemic is "preventable and controllable"

    Release time: January 23, 2020 22:00 Source: China News Network

      [Explanation] On January 23rd, Wang Guangfa, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Peking University First Hospital, and member of the expert group on pneumonitis associated with new coronavirus, said in an interview with China News Agency that he still believes that the current epidemic Anti-controllable ".

      [Explanation] On January 10, Wang Guangfa was interviewed on the development of new coronavirus. At that time, he believed that the overall epidemic situation was "preventable and controllable" according to the patient's illness and spread. With the spread of the epidemic, Wang Guangfa's "preventable and controllable" has been questioned on the Internet. In particular, the media disclosed that on January 21, Wang Guangfa himself was "recruited" and was diagnosed with a new type of coronavirus. The wave of questioning of his opinion was quickly pushed to its highest point.

      [Explanation] Wang Guangfa said in a telephone interview with a reporter in the isolation ward that he had the opportunity to go online after the fever had subsided on the 22nd. Wang Guangfa told reporters that on Weibo, blessings and encouragement messages accounted for the vast majority. However, some people questioned.

      [Explanation] Wang Guangfa then posted a Weibo to explain how he was infected and whether the epidemic was preventable and controllable. Wang Guangfa told reporters that he was relatively calm about the doubts of netizens. Everyone seeks common ground while shelving differences, and should allow different voices.

      We need to communicate a message to the public. Of course we also mentioned that here we still need to pay attention to personal protection. What I was talking about at the time was in fact that everyone should do a good job of personal hygiene and personal protection. Who is the last line of defense for health responsibility? Be personal.

      [Explanation] Wang Guangfa recalled that when he went to Wuhan, he felt that the epidemic situation was not too simple. At that time, the epidemic situation was not very clear. It was not clear what the situation was from person to person. There is indeed a process for understanding a new disease. He said he still believes that the epidemic is "preventable and controllable", but has only escalated. Society has to pay more for this, including affection, affection, health and economy. The key is that we have to act according to local conditions.

      Wuhan restricted travel is an upgrade. I think this is right. With the settlement of Wuhan, the pressure in other places will be reduced, and the risk of introduction in other places will be greatly reduced. That is, as long as your measures are in place, it is preventable and controllable. It's just our price. Many ordinary people understand that what can be prevented and controlled is easy. I said flu, flu is generally known to be preventable and controllable, but I want to ask everyone, how many people die each year?

      [Explanation] In the reporter's 50-minute interview, Wang Guangfa could not hear the obvious difference from normal people except for occasional cough. Wang Guangfa told reporters that this was because the doctor suggested that he use a drug called "lopinavirlitonavir tablets", which is an antiviral drug for AIDS. This drug is effective in his case, but it is unclear whether it will be effective in other patients and follow-up observations are needed.

      Taiwan has stated it would provide antiviral drugs free of charge - but I can only find references to these;
      "Oral Oseltamivir and inhaled Zanamivir are recommended
      for confirmed cases during non-flu season, and ILI patients with contact, cluster, occupational or
      travel histories during the flu season. Intravenous Peramivir and Favipiravir are reserved as second
      line medications for severe laboratory-confirmed influenza cases or critical ILI cases with strong
      clinical suspicion." From https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjo...r-comments.pdf

    Would be wonderful if this well established AIDS antiviral turns out to be an effective medication for this disease.
    Dr Wang is clearly a top tier individual, at China's premier University hospital, so his positive experience will certainly be used as a model. We should find out shortly whether his was a pioneering treatment or just a fortunate coincidence.
